Against the Current is a rotating, spherical painting created by artist, Dick Termes.
It presents the viewer with the opportunity to see the entire historic expedition of Meriwether
Lewis and William Clark.
The visual journey begins at the Missouri River in St. Louis, the globe’s bottom focal point.
As the painting slowly spins, the eye travels up the Missouri in a spiraling fashion to the
Pacific Coast at the spheres top.
Along the way, Termes reveals the Corps discoveries of our nation’s landforms, waterways and
animals. He draws great details of the Native American tribes Lewis and Clark encountered.
Embedded in the River, Termes has detailed a map, so the viewer can see his or her exact location
in respect to overall adventure.
Against the Current is a visual representation of the Corps of Discovery’s compilation
of Lewis and Clark’s Expedition.
This portion of the sphere shows the returning of the Keelboat from the Mandan Village.
